Our Commitment

Made forthe room,not the catalog.

Bookcases, window seats, mudroom lockers, media walls, coffered ceilings, wainscoting and trim, plus custom cabinetry for kitchens, baths and closets. Cabinets are built for your room by cabinetmakers we manage, or come from a partner cabinet line when that fits the budget better. Either way it’s drawn, priced and in your written scope before anything is built.

From Ryan

Ryan McNee, owner, The Home X

Every built-in looks good on day one. Year five is the test: doors still close, shelves don’t sag, trim still meets a crooked wall.

So I draw it for your room instead of forcing a catalog box in. If a partner line gets you the same look for less, I’ll say so. Drawing and price in writing before anyone cuts a board.

Drawn Before It’s Built

You see the dimensions and the layout in writing before anything is cut. If it isn’t in the scope, it isn’t in the job.

02

Built or Bought, Your Call

Custom where the room needs it, a partner cabinet line where that gives you more for the money. We tell you which and why.

03

Written Change Orders

If you change something, or we open a wall and find a problem, you get a written change order with the price. That work starts only after you sign it.

04

1-Year Workmanship Warranty

Your contract carries a 1-year workmanship warranty. Manufacturer warranties on fixtures, appliances and materials pass through to you.

We come to the house and see the space.

03

Written Scope

After the visit

After our visit you get the scope in writing: what we do and don’t do, the materials, allowances, schedule and price.

04

You Decide

Before you sign

You owe nothing until you sign. Anything you haven’t picked yet is carried as an allowance in the scope.

05

The Build

On site

A crew we manage does the work; plumbing, electrical and HVAC work goes to subcontractors in those trades, and other specialty trades when a job needs them. On your job, any permit the work needs is in place before that work starts. If something puts a date at risk, you hear it from us first.

06

Changes and Warranty

In writing

Any change comes as a written change order, priced and signed before that work starts. Your contract carries a 1-year workmanship warranty.

Common Questions

Custom Carpentry & Built-Ins
— answered honestly.

Straight answers about custom carpentry & built-ins, before you sign.

Both. Cabinets can be built for your room by cabinetmakers we manage, or come from a partner cabinet line when that gives you more for the money. Which one, and why, is in your written scope before you sign.

Stock cabinets come in set sizes and finishes. Semi-custom lines let you change sizes, finishes and details inside a catalog. Custom cabinets are built to the exact room, so odd walls, tall ceilings and tight spots get used instead of filled. We go through which fits your room and budget at the visit.

We only publish prices from jobs we’ve signed, and we don’t have a built-in range to publish yet. It depends on the size, the wood, the finish and the hardware. Your number comes in a written scope after our visit, and you owe nothing until you sign.

Usually, yes. Many older profiles are still made, and the rest can be matched. If an exact match isn’t possible, we tell you before you sign, not after it’s up.

A crew we manage does the work; plumbing, electrical and HVAC work goes to subcontractors in those trades, and other specialty trades when a job needs them. You still deal with one company and one point of contact the whole way through.

You get a written change order with the price, and the extra work starts only after you sign it. That goes for changes you ask for and for problems we find once the walls or floors are open.

A 1-year workmanship warranty on our installation, written into your contract. Manufacturer warranties on the products themselves pass through to you.
